| Athletic Boosters Announces Athletic Awards
Student Athletes and Coaches Have Successful 2009-2010 Season
August 12, 2010 As Maggie Walker athletes and coaches begin preparations for the 2010-2011 fall sports season, the Athletic Boosters would like to take the time to recognizing some of those student-athletes and coaches who were cited last season for their performance.
Annual
Pursuit of Perfection Leadership Awards, sponsored by LEXUS Of Richmond – Congratulations
to Hunter Knight (Henrico), Virginia Young (Richmond) and Jocelyn
Powelson (Richmond) as weekly
winners. They are eligible for the
overall award, which includes a $5,000.00 scholarship.
Two Golfers Qualify for Regionals. Timmy Earley (Hanover) and Travis
McCall (Chesterfield) qualified as the
#1 and #2 seeded individuals
Field Hockey All Academic Team, District
Player of the Year, Co-Regional Player of the Year, 1st Team All
Metro and 1st Team
All State:
Cassie
Turnage (Hanover).
National Field Hockey Coaches Association
NFHCA National Academic Squad: Susan Ballentine (Chesterfield), Maria Maguire
(Henrico), Mackenzie Tucker (Henrico) and Virginia Young (Richmond).
Cross Country Teams: In the Freshmen races the MLWGS Girls and Boys
teams both placed first in the district.
The JV Girls team finished first in districts and the Boys team placed
second. The Varsity Girls team placed
first in district and the Boys team placed third. At the Regional Championships
the Varsity Girls placed second in the region and the Varsity Boys placed
third. Both Teams qualified to compete
in the State Championships. Clarissa Schick (Richmond), Anna Spiers (Chesterfield), Marc
Breidenbaugh (Hanover) and Cody
Talmadge (Chesterfield) all earned All
Region and All Region Academic honors.
New School Record Set in the 1600 Meter
Indoor: Clarissa Schick (Richmond) broke the record
and earned her 6th All State Honor at the State Indoor
Championships, February 2010.
All Americans – USA
Track and Field Junior Olympic Honors: Marc Breidenbaugh
(Hanover), Clarissa Schick
(Richmond) and Caroline Newcomb (Chesterfield).
Maggie Walker Boys and Girls Win Central
Region Swim Championships. Thirty two swimmers from MLWGS participated in the
meet with sixteen swimmers qualifying for states. Hunter Knight (Henrico) was named Central
Region Swimmer of the Year.
Boys Soccer Coach named Colonial District
Coach of the Year. Ryan Molloy
garnered this recognition for his leadership skills and the fine example4 set
in the true spirit of athletics.
2010 Times-Dispatch/Sports Backers Scholarship
Athletes of the Year. Hunter Knight
(Henrico) received 1st Runner up in this competition and received a
$4,500 college scholarship. Clarissa
Schick (Richmond) was a finalist
and won a $2,500 scholarship.
MLWGS Coach Wins Girls’ National
High School
Coach of the Year. Jim Holdren won this honor from Gill Athletics, in conjunction with USA
Track & Field (USATF).
